Belgard or Techo-Bloc? The Paver Lines We Install in San Diego — and When We Spec Each

Two manufacturers cover most of the paver work we install. Which line goes on which house is a design decision — here is how we make it.

The two names behind most of our hardscape

Walk our projects across San Diego County and you will find two manufacturers under most of the pavers: Belgard and Techo-Bloc. Not because they are the only options — the supply yards carry a dozen brands — but because these two lines consistently deliver the color depth, dimensional accuracy, and finish quality that survive a decade of San Diego sun without reading tired.

Which one goes on which project is a design decision, not a coin flip. Here is how we actually make it.

When we spec Belgard

Belgard Urbana — the workhorse for traditional and Mediterranean homes. A cut-flagstone texture in blended warm tones that reads correctly beside Spanish Colonial and Tuscan architecture — which is to say, beside a large share of the housing stock in Rancho Santa Fe and the older coastal neighborhoods.

Belgard Mega-Arbel — the large-format flagstone look. Irregular shapes, generous scale, and enough surface texture to hide the dust that inland San Diego yards generate. This is the paver for the estate patio that wants to feel like it was quarried, not manufactured.

Belgard Dimensions — clean rectangles for transitional homes that want order without going full-modern.

When we spec Techo-Bloc

Techo-Bloc Blu 60 — our most-installed contemporary paver. A smooth, slightly textured slab in cool greys that photographs like poured concrete but installs with all the advantages of segmental paving: no crack control joints, repairable in sections, and immediate use after installation. On a modern white-stucco or coastal-contemporary house, Blu 60 is usually the answer.

Techo-Bloc’s own introduction to the Blu family shows the format range well:

Techo-Bloc Aberdeen — a weathered-stone texture with the color complexity of natural flagstone at a fraction of natural stone’s installed cost. It bridges traditional and transitional houses gracefully.

Techo-Bloc Industria — the polished, large-format architectural slab. When the design brief says minimalist, Industria delivers the tightest joints and cleanest lines in the segmental category.

What matters more than the brand

An honest note from the installation side: the base preparation matters more than the paver. A premium slab floated over a poorly compacted base fails identically to a budget one — it just costs more when it does. Every paver installation we run gets an engineered base compacted in lifts, polymeric joint sand, and a proper edge restraint. That is where the ten-year difference lives, and it is the part no product brochure can sell you.

The other honest note: not every house wants pavers. On certain modern homes, smooth poured concrete with sawcut joints is both the cheaper and the more architecturally correct answer — and when that is true, we say so. The material serves the house, not the other way around.

Choosing yours

The short version of our selection logic: match the paver’s texture and tone to the architecture first, the neighborhood second, and the maintenance appetite third. If you are weighing pavers against concrete, our pavers vs. concrete guide walks through the trade-offs, and our patios and hardscape page covers how we build.
